由中國國務院與天津市政府所組成的聯合工作組，星期五召開了大爆炸之後的第一次記者會，但提供的資訊讓外界很不滿意。包括為何起火，而導致危險品倉庫連環大爆炸，以及危險品倉庫內的品項與數量，中國政府方面都是一問三不知。發生大爆炸的天津「濱海新區」區長張勇表示，目前還有部份外圍地區，明火沒有被完全撲滅，消防單位主要採用乾粉與沙土掩埋的方式，掩埋滅火；但由於爆炸核心區域，仍然有小規模爆炸發生，救援隊伍只有撤離核心區，等待火勢自然熄滅。
